UPDATE : The new drivers have fixed the issue. Please see this post for more Informaiton
Have an Nvidia Graphics driver and cannot change your brightness? I also had the same problem after upgrading my Lenovo G460 to Windows 8 Pro. I contacted Nvidia and they have given me the solution. Here are the steps to follow to enable your brightness setting:
1) Download the latest 314.21 beta driver (haven't tested this on the current driver) here: http://www.geforce.com/drivers/results/59436 and perform a clean install.
2) check if "Enable adaptive brightness" option is enabled and if yes try turning it off to see if that will help. This option is located under the Windows 8 power options. You can access it via the Windows control panel > Power Options > Change plan settings (which ever plan is active) > Change advanced power settings > Display > Enable Adaptive Brightness.
3) Check if you are able to change your brightness.
3) If the "Enable adaptive brightness" option does not impact issue then try following the steps below to add a registry and see if that helps.
4) How to add registry key:
1. Make sure you are running the 314.21 driver.
2. Download the "DispRegEdit.exe" tool from http://goo.gl/f0wUt to your local system. This tool will take you directly to the registry location where all the graphics drivers registry entries are stored.
3. Run the "DispRegEdit.exe" tool. It should bring up the registry editor and take you directly to the location where all the NVIDIA driver settings are store.
4. Create a new key by right-clicking on the right-hand pan of the registry editor window and then select "New" > "DWORD (32-bit) Value".
5. Label the name of the new key as "RMBrightnessControlFlags".
6. Once key has been created, double click the new key and then add the "0x800" to Value data area. Click OK to save.
7. Restart Windows.
8. Check brightness control again
5) This solution is for selected laptop models. If this did not work for you, here's an extract from my Personal Assistance question -
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
That should be fine but it may be best if the other users impacted by this problem submit a bug to NVIDIA. Again the registry key will be targeted for specific laptop models only so unless we know which laptop model is impacted it will not be added to our future drivers. Adding this registry key is more a temporary workaround until we can get this fixed in a future driver. Have other users submit a bug to the link below with "[For Ray]" in the subject so I can pick those up. Have user include the following information in the bug submission.
1. Brand/model of the laptop.
2. Run dxdiag.exe and save log. Upload the log with the submission.

6) My friend Ray will help you with your brightness problems or any other problems with your display drivers. Mine took a lot of time to be solved but don't worry, we now know the right solution for mostly all systems having an Nvidia graphics card.
The above link to the NVIDIA registry entries does not work. Could you please provide an alternative way of downloading this. A search with Google did not show any alternative download-option.
ReplyDeleteThanks & best regards!
Thanks for notifying Micha. The link has been updated. Please try downloading it now.

Hi Nikhil,

do you think that registry key work on AMD too?
It should probably work. Make sure that you update to the latest version as above and try it. Please tell me if it works. If not, I'll be happy to further assist you..

Thanks man! That helps a lot!
ReplyDeleteDid this solution work for you? Please share and tell your friends about it. I don't want anybody to have this problem again.
DeleteThanks,
Nik.
This worked for my late-2008 nvidia 9400m unibody Macbook! Been trying to fix this problem for a LONG time!
ReplyDeleteHere's what I did:
1. Uninstall old nVidia drivers.
2. Install Driver Fusion 1.6.0
3. Restart into Safemode (F8 before Windows splash screen).
4. Run Driver Fusion and remove all nVidia registry settings left over from uninstall.
5. Restart into Windows normally
6. Install WHQL approved 314.22 drivers for Windows 7
7. Restart
8. Run DispRegEdit.exe and enter the following two entries:
I. Add a new DWORD called "EnableBrightnessControl" and set the value to 1.
II. Add a new DWORD called "RMBrightnessControlFlags" and set the value to 800.
9. Restart and enjoy brightness settings again!
Thanks for the advice Nikhil, I hope this helps others.
Thanks Mike! That sure should help Mac users.

DeleteAt last! I installed the last driver (340.52) and do registry tricks of point 8. It works! Really thanks!
DeleteThanks, i only missed the RMBrightnessControlFlags entry, a simple disable and enable of the display adapter did the trick, now screen brightness settings are working fully, even the dynamic settings.
DeleteSuper
I can't type the letter x for "0x800" in the value data area. Can you help me please?
ReplyDeleteDid you try to copy and paste the value from the instructions? Please note that you need to double click and add the value in the popup box. Please remember that it should be a "DWORD (32-bit) Value". Try these steps again and tell me if it works.
DeleteThanks.

DeleteIt didn't work for me. I'm using Sony vaio VPCEH25EN and NVIDIA GeForce 410M
ReplyDeleteVersion:9.18.13.2702 Date:8-30-2013 with Windows 8 Pro 64bit!
Thanx
Hi! Did you update to 314.21 beta driver? This solution might not work on other versions. Please keep me updated!
DeleteThanks to this blog, I managed to fix my problem on my Late 2010 Macbook Air 13 inch laptop (Nvidia 320M graphics chipset). I hacked boot camp plist.info so that it would create a USB install for my laptop on Mavericks. Then created the Windows partition, formatted it and installed Windows 7 Ultimate. I then had issues with wake from sleep (black screen, couldn't see anything, but sound volume buttons when pressed had sound, so i knew it was working, but display drivers not working correctly).
ReplyDeleteSo I installed Nvidia drivers from their website, version 340.43 beta . This solved the wake from sleep issue, but then I couldn't get the brightness controls to work. Then I simply downloaded DispRegEdit, and added the following 2 lines:
1. A new DWORD called "EnableBrightnessControl" and set the value to 1.
2. A new DWORD called "RMBrightnessControlFlags" and set the value to 800.
Rebooted and now everything is working!
Thanks to everyone, especially Nikhil!
Good to know I could help. :)
DeleteHey Nikhil,
ReplyDeleteFirst of all thank you for your instructions.
Unfortunately it does not work properly for me.
1) Addition of DWORD "EnableBrightnessControl" with a value of 1 to registry:
Now I can change the brightness in the mobility center, HOWEVER the brightness will only be adjusted if the left mouse key is pressed. Once the left mouse key is no longer pressed, the slider and hence the brightness jumps back to the original position/ setting. Values of 2,3,4,... haven't worked neither.
Moreover the brightness scale (low brightness, high brightness) is inverted.
2) Additional to step 1, addition of DWORD "RMBrightnessControlFlags" with a value of 800:
The slider can be adjusted (it does not jump back after release of the mouse key), unfortunately in this case the brightness adjustment is again not working.
I had already a conversation with Nvidia through their support page about that. They told me that this could be a driver bug. Unfortunately they do not reply to me since March....
Do you have any ideas?
Thanks,
Peter
Hello Peter!
DeleteTo help you further, may I know your laptop/computer model and your graphics card model? Some models require specific workarounds.
Thanks!
I have an Asus Zenbook UX51VZ, it has a Geforce GT 650M and Windows 7 64-bit.
DeleteThanks!
Hi!
DeleteThanks for that info. I think this is due to the bloatware installed by Asus. You have to check their website for specific driver updates for your model. If you find it, perform a clean install so anything buggy is removed.
I have performed a clean install with the driver from the Asus website, but it does not work. Same with any of the newer Nvidia drivers.

ReplyDeletehi i have a late 2009 imac and when i install the latest nvidia driver ,the 340.52 WHQL , i cant controll the brightness and its unbearable, rolling back the driver sorts it out but is there any fix?
ReplyDeleteYou should keep the version that lets you control the brightness. If these steps do not work, you should contact Nvidia support with complete details of your system and driver.
Deletegraphics card is a nvidia ge force 9400,windows 7 64bit
ReplyDeleteThank you so so much Nikhil !

DeleteDear Nikhil,

Thank you so much
That's good!
DeleteAloha,
ReplyDeleteI have Sony Vaio desktop, i7, Win8 64, Nvidia GeForce GT620M (2G). I just spent 7 hours on the phone with Sony, trying to fix this. We did constantly check the power options (instead of the charms icon), with no result, no slider bar. I did see him try to change values in the registry, but no slider. He will be calling back tomorrow at noon, to restore the computer to its beginnings, unless I can give him a fix. Could you possibly list the order of what he should try? Honest, 7 hours.
The things you should try first -
ReplyDelete1) Upgrade to the latest drivers.
2) If that doesn't work, follow the instructions above to add the registry key.
3) Try rolling back to a previously working driver.
4) Directly contact Nvidia.
I sincerely hope your problem is solved after all that hardwork.
Excellent and helpful post… I am so glad to left comment on this. This has been a so interesting read, would love to read more here….
ReplyDeletegeforce graphics card
Still works on Windows 10 Creators Update on MacBookPro mid2012 with nvidia gt 650M.
ReplyDeletejust add the 2 registry keys, reboot and brightness works,
if the screen is quite dim, disable the adaptive screen brightness setting in windows 10. and the screen will go full bright.
thanks a lot, i searched quite a while before i found this one !!!!
